The Resurgence of the Baking Industry

Research conducted by Cake Bake & Sweets Show has revealed that baking has made a comeback and is now more popular than ever.

How popular, exactly? So popular in fact, that the research found 75% of respondents would rather bake than have a night out with their partner. 89% also admitted that they want people to be impressed by what they make, re-enforcing just how significant baking has again become and that it’s not just personal satisfaction driving the trend.

The increasing popularity surrounding baking and patisserie has amplified in recent years and can somewhat be credited to the rise of TV cooking shows, with 48% of those surveyed revealing this was where they drew most inspiration from. Along with cooking shows, the rise in forward thinking female bakers and pastry chefs such as Kirsten Tibballs, Katherine Sabbath, and Anna Polyviou have re-defined what once was a male dominated industry and have become frequents on our TV screens.

Renowned for their bright, modern and exuberant creations, the talented trio are certainly not afraid to push the boundaries, representing what is now the new age of baking and patisserie. These ladies have also fast become some of the talked about names not only in the industry, but in homes across Australia, working up a combined Instagram following of almost one million followers, proving just how influential these women have become.

With many of us drawing on inspiration from the likes of Kirsten, Katherine, and Anna it’s evident that we’re a country that loves to cook – and do a good job of it. Cake Bake and Sweets’ research also highlighted that 69% of visitors place high importance on plating up impressive dishes and desserts when entertaining, and 62% admitted that they think they are better bakers than most of their friends.

With home baking on the rise and the recent growth and fascination surrounding the baking industry, there’s no doubt that the Cake Bake & Sweets Show is more relevant than ever. Visitors are expected to gather at both the Sydney and Melbourne events to draw inspiration and learn from not only Kirsten, Katherine, and Anna, but also the impressive line up of international stars including; Benny Rivera, Eric Lanlard, Lorraine Pascale and Siba Mtongana.

Miguel Maestre Throws His Hat in the Cake Bake Ring

Adding to the already jam packed celebrity schedule lined up for this year’s Cake Bake & Sweets Show, the event is thrilled to announce that Australia’s favourite Spaniard, Miguel Maestre, has joined the line up.

The popular TV Chef will not only demonstrate some of his most-loved dishes on the For the Love of Cooking stage, he will also bring a pop up version of his El Toro Loco restaurant to both shows.

Providing the perfect spot for visitors to take a break from the show floor and experience one of many savoury offerings at the event, the pop up venue will offer a full and adventurous menu. With a focus on choice, El Toro Loco will feature some of the dishes he’ll be demonstrating on stage, plus giant paella freshly cooked on site, Spanish style tapas, and his unique porchetta with soft bread and jamon jaffles.

Miguel is thrilled to be part of the show, saying, “We’ve never done an activation like this before, and it’s a big move for me to bring the restaurant back so I’m really excited. I want to bring a real restaurant experience to the show and its visitors.”

Despite the strong savoury offering at this year’s events, for those who are looking for a total sugar rush, Chocolate Masterclasses have also just been confirmed for both the Sydney and Melbourne shows. Presented by Callebaut chocolate and Le Cordon Bleu, the two iconic industry brands have teamed up to host a series of chocolate-focused demonstrations. With demonstrations showcasing the myriad of ways that chocolate can be used in all styles of cooking and baking, the masterclasses will give visitors the opportunity to learn the secrets behind how the country’s greatest patissiers make chocolate magic happen.

To celebrate all of this deliciousness, visitors can also toast themselves in the just announced [yellow tail] VIP Lounge, where the brand’s delightful range of wines and sparklings will be free flowing.

As the show draws nearer, Cake Bake & Sweet show continues to gather momentum and excitement with a line-up of international and national cooking celebrities, multiple stages and workshop opportunities, plus dedicated zones covering all things cooking and healthy living.

Cake artist to the stars, Benny Rivera, headed for Australia’s sweetest event!

No doubt our fascination with patisserie, cakes and all things sweet has continued to grow over the years, with bright and colourful treats filling our favourite pastry stores and bakery windows, and celebrity cake makers amazing us with their creations.

Benny Rivera, the Owner of City Cakes in New York, is undoubtedly one of the talented cake artists behind this trend and is certainly a force to be reckoned with. Benny creates products that at first glance are so life-like, they look too good to eat.

It seems hard to believe that Benny’s passion for creating exquisite cakes started out as a hobby in his hometown of Puerto Rico, when he was a young teenager. This passion took somewhat of a backseat however, when he decided to relocate to New York City in 1996, placing his focus on foreign market financial analysis.

It wasn’t long after his move to the big apple that Benny realised that financial analysis was not where his heart truly lay, and that he was craving the creativeness of cake decorating. It was then that Benny began taking culinary courses to learn the latest techniques in creating elaborate, sophisticated and unique designs.

Fast-forward to 2018 and Benny is now the extremely successful Owner of City Cakes in New York, which has taken the form of a high-end, custom cake design studio and bakery in the heart of Manhattan. Here, Benny specialises in three dimensional sculpted cakes including life-like pumpkins, chocolates, sugar paste flowers, butter cream, royal icing and creative fondant.

Along with running and successful business, Benny is a regular on TV screens and in magazines across America – and has fast become one of the most sought after cakes artists around the world. Called upon by some of the most popular celebrities in the world, Benny has been asked to create cakes for Jennifer Lopez, Bethany Frankel, Fergie, Kevin Bacon, James Franco and Mike Myers. (He admits that his real dream however, is to one day create cake designs for Madonna and Ellen DeGeneres.)

Benny was also recently named Cake Artist of the Year by the New York Cake Show and the American Cake Decorator Magazine and has continued to remain a mentor for those that work alongside him at City Cakes.

Australia will get the chance to see Benny up close and personal as he joins star-studded line up of celebrity chefs, chocolatiers, and cake artists for the return of the Cake Bake and Sweets Show in Sydney and Melbourne this November. Be sure to purchase your tickets to Benny’s workshop, which are limited in number and offer a full day with this international superstar, as he teaches you how to create his self-made and utterly adorable 3D cake, Emotional Eddie – http://www.cakebakeandsweets.com/sydney/timetable/self-made-emotional-eddie/

The Lucrative Business of Christmas

The holiday rush is already creeping up on us, and there’s no doubt that Christmas is the single busiest time of the year for retailers and small business owners. According to figures released by the Australian Retailers Association, shoppers were expected to spend $19 billion on food nationally in the pre-Christmas period in 2016, making up a whopping 40 per cent of our total retail purchases.

Knowing this, it’s important that as a small business or retailer you are already planning for the Christmas and peak summer trade. Being prepared means not only the opportunity to maximise sales, but also expand your customer base and continue to build on brand loyalty into the new year.

Planning well in advance ensures that retailers are not only prepared for the busy period, but also able to take advantage of the ample opportunities that come about as a result of it. Sales histories evidence that consumers are often more willing to spend money across the Christmas period. Extending far beyond generous gift giving, our nation places a huge focus on food and liquor across the festive season. This is fantastic for those operating in this space and the perfect time for businesses to invest in their products and services to ensure they are in the eyes and minds of consumers. Events such as the Cake Bake & Sweets Show are perfect for those wanting to do just that.

As the biggest event of its kind, the Cake Bake & Sweets Show falls at just the right time for the Christmas period, kicking off in Sydney and Melbourne this November. More than just a sweets show, the event provides a positive platform for business operators across the sweets, savoury and beverage space to launch new products, expand on already exciting products, and engage with new customers ahead of Christmas.

Positioning your brand in front of thousands of consumers who are in attendance and looking to shop, the Cake Bake & Sweets Show is the perfect platform to showcase what your business has to offer ahead of the Christmas rush, make sales on site, and right in the mist of consumers Christmas planning.

With over 45,000 consumers visiting the event in 2016 and over $5 million dollars spent across the floor, Cake Bake & Sweets Show is proven to be a strong platform for both new and established businesses wanting to take leverage and expand their Christmas trade. Promising a plethora of business opportunities on ground, the 2018 event offers the biggest line up to date, and promises three days of sweet satisfaction across both Sydney and Melbourne.

From MasterChef to Sweet Treats Pop-Up Bar

Sydney mum of two and MasterChef 2018 contestant, Hoda Kobeissi, will be debuting her new business Halawa at this year’s Cake, Bake & Sweets Show.

From humble beginnings growing up in a family of foodies, Hoda learnt her culinary skills from her own mother. Cooking for her siblings when her parents worked late, Hoda quickly found her passion.

Practicing her newfound love at school, Hoda excelled in cooking classes but followed a different path and went on to graduate with a Social Science degree, majoring in Counselling. Despite an established career in mental health support, Hoda’s love for cooking remained and led her to applying for MasterChef 2018.

Competing for seven weeks in this year’s MasterChef, Hoda impressed the judges with her hand pulled cotton candy in the first round.

Since leaving the competition Hoda has created her very own Middle Eastern sweet treats business, Halawa, meaning ‘sweetness’ in Arabic. Hoda’s new business uses her unique skills and love of Middle Eastern flavours to create stunning desserts.

From sweet baklawa to kashta (clotted cream) and pistachio dessert cups, atayef (Lebanese pancakes) to meghli and mhallabiyeh (spiced rice pudding and rose water milk pudding), Hoda’s creations will be on offer through her pop-up dessert bar, which is launching very soon!

Before then, at this year’s Cake, Bake & Sweets Show, Hoda will be previewing Halawa so guests can taste her unique and very special treats for themselves.

Research commissioned by Cake Bake & Sweets Show* has revealed that as much as their visitors love a sweet treat, cooking is where their hearts truly lie.

Although unsurprisingly found to be incredibly keen bakers, the survey results showed that Cake Bake visitors are also seriously into their food and cooking, cook almost every day, and almost 40% spend over $1,000 per year on kitchen appliances and equipment.

Key findings indicate that 31% of Cake, Bake & Sweets attendees cook at home 7 nights per week, and almost 60% of these cooks believe that the food they make is often better than when they eat out. And whilst 92% say they love to bake, 69% get as much pleasure from cooking, saying they enjoy eating out but that more pleasure is gained from cooking and eating at home.

Event Director James Liang says, “These findings demonstrate that the Cake, Bake, and Sweets visitor may love the sweetness of the event, but at the heart of things, they are a true cook. In response, we have broadened the scope of this year’s event to more accurately reflect what it is that our visitors are truly passionate about – and that’s cooking, whether sweet or savoury.”

A new feature area, For the Love of Cooking, is a direct response to the findings, and will debut at the 2018 events. The new zone will offer visitors the chance to find exciting products and learn new skills that will allow them to take their passion for cooking and baking to the next level. The Healthy Living zone will also allow those with a keen interest in cooking the chance to explore the healthier side of baking and desserts. The dedicated theatre will have a focus on raw, free-from, and fresh, proving that when it comes to baking and desserts – you can have your cake and eat it too.
